Adobe Fonts: What It Is, How to Activate and Free Alternatives

Adobe Fonts is Adobe's online font library that comes with Creative Cloud. Instead of buying font files one by one, you switch fonts on from a website and they appear in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Word and other apps on your computer.

This guide explains how Adobe Fonts works, how to activate a font step by step, how to use it on a website, the famous Adobe original fonts, and free alternatives if you do not have a subscription. The preview above shows a free look-alike so you can test your text.

What Is Adobe Fonts?

Adobe Fonts used to be called Typekit, so a search for Adobe Typekit or Typekit Adobe leads to the same service. It is a large collection of fonts from Adobe and many other type foundries, all in one place at fonts.adobe.com.

It works like a subscription library, not a shop:

  • Access comes with Adobe Creative Cloud plans. How many fonts you can use depends on your plan; full Creative Cloud plans include the main library, while a free Adobe account gets a smaller selection.
  • You "activate" a font and it syncs to your computer through the Creative Cloud desktop app.
  • Activated fonts work in almost any app on that computer, not only Adobe ones.
  • They stay available while your subscription is active. If it ends, the fonts are switched off.
  • You do not get the font files to copy or share.

How to Activate Adobe Fonts

  1. Install the Creative Cloud desktop app and sign in with your Adobe ID.
  2. Open fonts.adobe.com in your browser and sign in with the same account.
  3. Browse or search for a font. Use the filters for serif, sans serif, script, weight and language.
  4. Open the font family page and switch on the toggle for the whole family or just the styles you need.
  5. Wait a few seconds for the sync. The font now shows in the font menu of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Word and other apps.

Font not showing? Make sure the Creative Cloud app is running and you are signed in, then restart the design app. To see or remove your active fonts, open the Fonts section of the Creative Cloud app or the "Added fonts" page on the website.

Adobe Font Search and the Adobe Fonts Library

The Adobe font library at fonts.adobe.com has a search box and filters. For a quick Adobe font search, type a font name, or filter by classification (serif, sans serif, script), weight, width and language. You can also type your own sample text so every result shows your words.

Each family page shows all its styles, so you can compare regular, bold and italic before you activate anything.

Adobe Font Finder: Identify a Font from a Photo

If you see a font on a poster or packaging and want to know its name, an Adobe font identifier can help. The Adobe Capture app on your phone has a type feature: take a photo of some text and it suggests similar fonts from the Adobe Fonts library. You can then open those matches on fonts.adobe.com.

This font finder Adobe tool works best with clear, straight text and a few letters in view. It shows close matches, not always the exact font, especially for custom logo lettering. For other ways to identify a font, including free websites, see our font finder guide.

Using Adobe Fonts on a Website

Adobe Fonts can also be used on websites through web projects:

  1. On a font page, choose "Add to Web Project".
  2. Create a project and select the weights and styles you need. Fewer styles load faster.
  3. Copy the embed code into the head of your website.
  4. Use the font name Adobe gives you in your CSS, with a fallback, like font-family: "source-sans-pro", sans-serif;.

The fonts load from Adobe's servers, and the project keeps working while your plan is active. If you want fonts you can host yourself forever at no cost, look at Google Fonts instead.

Adobe Fonts Licence: What You Can and Cannot Do

Adobe's terms allow subscribers to use activated fonts in personal and commercial design work, such as posters, logos, client projects and websites through web projects. Some uses, like embedding fonts in apps or e-books, have extra rules. Read the licensing page on Adobe's site for your exact case.

What you should not do: copy the synced font files to other computers, share them with friends, or download "Adobe fonts free" packs from random sites. Those are pirated, break the licence and can carry malware. Our free font download guide lists safe places to get free fonts.

Adobe Fonts vs Google Fonts vs Canva

  • Adobe Fonts: huge, high-quality library, best if you already pay for Creative Cloud. Fonts switch off if the plan ends.
  • Google Fonts: fully free and open source. You can download, install, self-host and share the files. Good for students and small businesses.
  • Canva: has its own font menu, and some fonts need a paid plan. See our Canva fonts page.

For most school projects, resumes and small websites, free Google fonts are more than enough. Browse the popular fonts hub to compare options.

Can you use a Google font in Adobe apps? Yes. Download the font from Google Fonts and install the file on your computer (on Windows, right-click and choose Install; on Mac, double-click and click Install Font). It then shows up in Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign next to your Adobe Fonts.

What are Adobe system fonts? Adobe apps list every font installed on your system (like Arial or Calibri) plus your activated Adobe Fonts in one menu. System fonts come from Windows, macOS or other software, not from Adobe Fonts.

Common questions

Is Adobe Fonts free?

There is no full Adobe fonts download for free. Adobe Fonts is included with Creative Cloud plans. A free Adobe account gives access to a smaller selection, while paid plans unlock the main library. Check Adobe's site for what your Adobe Fonts subscription includes.

Is Adobe Fonts the same as Typekit?

Yes. Typekit was the original name of the service. Adobe renamed it Adobe Fonts and built it into Creative Cloud.

Can I use Adobe Fonts in Microsoft Word?

Yes. Once a font is activated and synced, it appears in Word and other desktop apps on that computer. If you send the document to someone without the font, their computer may replace it.

What happens to my fonts if I cancel Creative Cloud?

The activated fonts are switched off and disappear from your font menus. Designs you already exported as images or PDFs keep looking the same.

Can I download Adobe Fonts files?

Not as loose files to keep or share. Fonts sync through the Creative Cloud app. The open-source Source family is the exception: you can download it free from Google Fonts or GitHub.
