Inter: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789

The Inter font is a sans serif made for one main job: being easy to read on screens. App buttons, dashboards, settings pages, small labels and long web articles all look clear in it, even at small sizes on a cheap phone.

Type in the preview above to see an Inter font sample with your own text. This page covers how Inter is different from other sans serifs, the full Inter font family (including Inter Tight and Inter Display), where to get the free download, and how to use it in design tools and code.

Fonts That Pair Well With Inter

Inter is neutral, so it works with many partners. Use one of these for headings or quotes, and keep Inter for body text and interface labels.

All of these are free on Google Fonts.

Who Made Inter and Why

Inter was designed by Rasmus Andersson, a Swedish designer who has worked on software products. He wanted a typeface built for computer screens and user interfaces rather than for print. The result is a font that is now everywhere in app design, websites and tools like Figma.

It is completely free and open source under the SIL Open Font License. You can find it on Google Fonts and on the designer's own site, rsms.me/inter.

Inter Font Characteristics: What Makes It Good on Screens

  • Tall x-height: small letters like a, e and n are tall compared to the capitals, so text stays readable at small sizes.
  • Open, simple shapes: letters are plain and neutral, without a strong personality that would distract from the content.
  • Tabular numbers: Inter can show numbers that all take the same width, so prices and figures line up in tables and timers. In CSS use font-variant-numeric: tabular-nums;.
  • Variable font: the Inter variable font lets you pick any weight on a smooth scale instead of fixed steps.
  • Many languages: it covers Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters, but not Indian scripts like Devanagari.

If you have used Helvetica or the system font on an iPhone, Inter will feel familiar. It is a popular free choice when you want that clean interface look without a paid licence. Compare it with Helvetica and Roboto, the Android system font.

The Inter Font Family: Weights, Inter Tight and Inter Display

The Inter font family runs from Thin (100) to Black (900), each with an italic. The Inter regular font and Inter medium font are the usual picks for body text and buttons. The Inter bold font works for headings, and the Inter black font is for big, heavy titles on banners and posters.

VersionWhat it isUse it for
InterThe main text familyBody text, apps, forms
Inter DisplayLarge-size design with tighter, finer detailsBig headings and hero text
Inter TightSame shapes with tighter letter spacingHeadlines, logos, short titles

Inter Tight font is a separate family on Google Fonts, so do the Inter tight font download from its own specimen page.

Inter Font Free Download From Google Fonts

To download Inter font safely, open the Google Fonts Inter font official specimen page and click the download button. You get the variable font files plus static files for each weight. The Inter font download is free and needs no sign-up. It covers the Inter black font download (or Inter black font free download), the Inter bold font free download and the Inter regular font free download in one go. You can also get the latest release from rsms.me/inter.

The Inter font license is the SIL Open Font License. It allows personal and commercial use, including apps, client websites and printed work. You may share the files, but you cannot sell the font on its own.

Skip third-party font sites. Their files may be outdated or bundled with unwanted software.

Using Inter in Figma, Word and on a Website

  • Figma: Inter is available in the font menu in Figma, so you can start designing right away.
  • Word or PowerPoint: install the .ttf files from the zip (right-click, Install on Windows; Font Book on Mac), then restart the app.
  • Website: add the embed link from Google Fonts and set font-family: 'Inter', sans-serif;.

Inter is a real font, so it only works where it is installed or loaded. For a styled look in a game name or Instagram bio, use copy-paste Unicode text from our font generator instead. For more font ideas, see our popular fonts guide.

Common questions

Is the Inter font free?

Yes. Inter is free and open source under the SIL Open Font License. You can use it for personal and commercial projects without paying.

Is Inter on Google Fonts?

Yes. The Inter Google Fonts page has the full family as a variable font with italics. Inter Tight has its own page there too.

What is the difference between Inter and Inter Tight?

They share the same letter shapes. Inter Tight has tighter spacing between letters, which looks better in large headlines but is less comfortable for long text.

Is Inter better than Roboto?

Neither is better in every case. Both are free and made for screens. Inter feels a little more neutral and has a taller x-height, while Roboto is the familiar Android look. Try both in the preview and pick what suits your project.

Can I use Inter for Hindi text?

Inter does not include Devanagari. Pair it with a Hindi font that has a similar clean style, or use a family like Poppins that supports both English and Hindi.

Is Inter good for printing?

Yes, it prints cleanly, but it was designed with screens in mind. For long printed reading like a book, many designers prefer a serif font.
