Lobster: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789
The Lobster font is a bold, retro script with thick connected letters that look like old shop signs and vintage posters. It is fun, loud and instantly noticeable, which is both its strength and its problem.

Where the Lobster Font Came From
Lobster was designed by Pablo Impallari, a type designer from Argentina, and released in 2010 as a free font. Its look takes inspiration from bold hand-lettering and old signs. It became one of the first hit display fonts on Google Fonts and spread to cafe logos, menus, greeting cards and countless website headers.
Because it was free, bold and different from plain fonts, almost everyone used it for a few years. That is why many designers now call it over-used. The font itself is well made; it just shows up everywhere.
The Lobster Font Style: Ligatures and Connected Letters
Most script fonts join letters with simple strokes. Lobster goes further: it has many ligatures, which are special joined shapes for common letter pairs. When you type, the font swaps in these shapes so the word flows like real lettering instead of separate pieces.
Other things you will notice:
- Thick, heavy strokes that stay readable even in small sizes compared with thin scripts.
- A slight slant and bouncy rhythm that feels playful and retro.
- Rounded, chunky letters that look great in a single colour on a busy photo.
Tip: ligatures work in Word, Canva, Photoshop and browsers. If letters look disconnected, check that the app has not turned off ligatures or added extra letter spacing.
Lobster vs Lobster Two Font
Lobster Two (sometimes searched as "Lobster 2 font") is a separate family by the same designer. It is a lighter, more flexible version.
| Lobster | Lobster Two | |
|---|---|---|
| Styles | One style (Regular) | Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic |
| Feel | Heavy, loud, signboard | Lighter, cleaner, more modern |
| Best for | One big word or logo | Headings and short lines |
| Licence | SIL Open Font License | SIL Open Font License |
If regular Lobster feels too heavy for a menu title or a card, try Lobster Two Regular first.
Lobster Font Free Download and Licence
Download it free from the official Lobster page on Google Fonts. Lobster Two has its own page, also on fonts.google.com. No account is needed. Skip random "Lobster font download" sites with many ads; they add nothing you cannot get from Google Fonts.
Both fonts are released under the SIL Open Font License, so you can use them for free in personal and commercial work: shop logos, menus, merchandise and YouTube thumbnails. You cannot sell the font files on their own.
To install, unzip and right-click the .ttf file and choose Install on Windows, or double-click and press Install Font on a Mac. In Canva, search "Lobster" in the font list. On a website, use font-family: 'Lobster', cursive; after adding the embed code.
How to Use Lobster Without Looking Dated
- Use it sparingly. One word or one short line per design. Never body text.
- Pair it with a clean sans. Put details in Open Sans, Lato or Oswald.
- No all caps. Script capitals side by side are hard to read.
- Give it space. Bold scripts need room around them to breathe.
- Match the mood. It fits cafes, bakeries, kids' parties, retro posters and food channels. It does not fit law firms, banks or formal letters.
For YouTube thumbnails, Lobster in white with a dark outline or shadow stands out well on bright images.
Common questions
Is the Lobster font free?
Yes. Lobster and Lobster Two are both free on Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License and can be used commercially.
Is there a Lobster font generator for Instagram?

Why do designers say Lobster is over-used?
It was one of the first popular free display fonts, so it appeared on a huge number of logos and websites. Used carefully and in small doses, it still works fine.
What is the difference between Lobster and Lobster Two?
Lobster has one heavy style. Lobster Two is lighter and comes in Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, so it is more flexible for headings.
Does Lobster support Hindi?
No, Lobster covers Latin script, not Devanagari. For decorated Hindi text you can copy, see our Hindi font style page.
