Font Download: Where to Get Free Fonts Safely and Install Them

A font download is easy, but where you download from matters a lot. Thousands of free fonts are shared legally by their designers, and you can use many of them in school projects, YouTube thumbnails, logos and client work without paying anything.

The problem is that many "free font" pages also pass around paid fonts without permission, or hide fake download buttons and unwanted software. This guide lists safe, legal places for a free font download, explains font licences in simple words, and shows how to install fonts on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone. It also covers Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and other Indian language fonts.

Best Free Font Sites for a Free Font Download

Start with these sites. Each one shares fonts with the permission of the designer, and each font comes with a licence you can read.

  • Google Fonts (fonts.google.com): over a thousand open-source families. Every font there is free to use, including for business. You can download fonts as a zip or link them on a website.
  • Fontshare (fontshare.com): free fonts from the Indian Type Foundry, with clean modern designs for brands and posters.
  • Font Squirrel (fontsquirrel.com): a collection of fonts that are checked for commercial use, plus a handy font identifier.
  • The League of Moveable Type (theleagueofmoveabletype.com): a small set of open-source display fonts.
  • Velvetyne (velvetyne.fr): experimental, artistic open-source fonts for posters and covers.

If you search for best fonts free download or new style fonts free download, these five sites cover most needs. Other font sites, such as DaFont or 1001 Free Fonts, mix many licence types in one place, so check each font's licence before you use it.

Font Licences Explained Simply

Every font has a licence. Check which type you have:

Licence typeWhat it means
SIL Open Font License (OFL)Free to use, share and use commercially. You cannot sell the font file by itself. All Google Fonts are open-source.
Free for commercial useThe designer allows business use. Read the exact terms, as some limit things like apps or logos.
Personal use onlyFine for a school project or your own wallpaper. Not allowed for client work, products or ads.
Demo versionA trial with missing letters or limits. You must buy the full font for real use.
System or bundled fontComes with Windows, Mac or Office (like Arial or Calibri). You can use it, but you cannot share the file.

Keep the licence file (often OFL.txt) that comes with the font.

Free Fonts for Commercial Use

For a logo, a shop board, a YouTube channel or client work, you need free fonts for commercial use. The safest picks:

  • Any font on Google Fonts: all are open source, so business use is allowed.
  • Fontshare: its fonts are free for personal and commercial use; read the licence on each font page.
  • Font Squirrel: it lists fonts that allow commercial use, but each one still has its own licence file.
  • The League of Moveable Type: open-source fonts you can use in paid work.

Keep a screenshot or copy of the licence with your project files. For logo ideas, see our logo fonts guide.

Free Fonts by Category: Script, Display, Serif and Handwriting

On Google Fonts, use the category filter to narrow thousands of free fonts. Some safe starting points:

Why Avoid Random Free Fonts Download Sites

Many sites that rank for fonts free download or font download free share paid fonts without permission, which can cause trouble for a logo or ad later. Some also hide malware in fake buttons.

  • A real font file ends in .ttf, .otf, .woff or .woff2, often inside a .zip.
  • Never run a .exe or .apk that claims to be a font.
  • Be careful with "1000 fonts" or "all fonts zip" packs from unknown sites.
  • If a famous paid font (like Helvetica, Gotham or Proxima Nova) is offered free, it is almost always unlicensed. Pick a free look-alike instead. See our popular fonts guide.

How to Install Fonts on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone

Windows 10 and 11: unzip the download first. Then right-click the .ttf or .otf file and choose Install (or Install for all users). You can also open Settings, then Personalization, then Fonts, and drag the file into the box. Restart Word or Photoshop to see the new font.

Mac: double-click the font file and click Install Font in Font Book.

Android: most phones do not let you add a font to the whole system. Design apps that allow custom fonts let you import a .ttf file inside the app. Changing the system font depends on your phone brand and its own settings or theme store.

iPhone and iPad: install a font app from the App Store that adds fonts to the system. The fonts then work in apps that support custom fonts, such as Pages, Keynote and many design apps.

Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil and Other Indian Language Fonts

Google Fonts has a language filter. Choose Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Bengali or another language, and you only see fonts that support that script. All are free Unicode fonts:

  • Hindi and Marathi (Devanagari): Noto Sans Devanagari, Mukta, Hind, Kalam. Marathi and Nepali use the same script, so one Marathi font download (or Nepali font free download) covers Hindi too. More in our Hindi font download guide.
  • Tamil: Noto Sans Tamil, Mukta Malar, Hind Madurai. For a Tamil bold font free download, these families include Bold weights in the same zip.
  • Telugu fonts download: Noto Sans Telugu, Hind Guntur.
  • Gujarati: Noto Sans Gujarati, Hind Vadodara.
  • Bengali: Noto Sans Bengali, Hind Siliguri.
  • Kannada and Malayalam: Noto Sans Kannada, Noto Sans Malayalam.

Windows also has Nirmala UI for major Indian scripts. Kohinoor fonts (Devanagari, Bangla, Telugu and more) are from the Indian Type Foundry; some versions come with Mac, so be wary of any Kohinoor font free download on random sites.

Older offices still use legacy (non-Unicode) fonts such as Kruti Dev and Devlys for Hindi, Shivaji for Marathi or Bamini for Tamil. Text typed in them looks garbled without that exact font. See our Kruti Dev font guide to convert such text to Unicode.

Common questions

Where can I get a free font download legally?

Google Fonts, Fontshare, Font Squirrel, The League of Moveable Type and Velvetyne all share fonts with the designer's permission. Google Fonts is the easiest start because every font there is open-source and free for commercial use.

Are all free fonts free for commercial use?

No. Some free fonts are for personal use only, and some are demo versions. Fonts under the SIL Open Font License can be used commercially. Always read the licence file that comes with the download.

Where can I download free fonts for commercial use, or an English font download for Word?

Google Fonts is the easiest, because every font there is open source and free for business use. Download the family, unzip it and install the .ttf file, and it shows in Word. Fontshare, Font Squirrel and The League of Moveable Type are also good, but read each licence.

Is a free font generator the same as a font download?

No. A free font generator like ours changes your text into special Unicode letters you can copy and paste into bios and chats. A font download gives you a font file to install for documents and designs.

Can I download fonts on Android?

You can download a font file, but most Android phones only use it inside apps that allow custom fonts, such as design apps. Changing the system font depends on your phone brand.

Is it safe to download fonts from any free fonts download site?

Not always. Some sites share paid fonts without permission or bundle malware. Stick to trusted sources, accept only .ttf, .otf or .zip files, and never run an .exe that claims to be a font.
