Gilroy font is a modern geometric sans serif that shows up in app screens, startup websites, pitch decks and brand logos. It has round, clean letters and a friendly feel, so it looks fresh without being boring.

Gilroy is a commercial font, so it is not on Google Fonts. The preview above uses Manrope, a free font with a similar clean style, and it is clearly labelled as an alternative. Below you will find who made Gilroy, what the weights are for, how to get it the legal way, and the best free fonts to use instead.

Who Made the Gilroy Font?

Gilroy was designed by Radomir Tinkov and is sold as a commercial typeface through font shops such as MyFonts. It became a favourite of UI designers and branding studios because it reads well on small phone screens and also looks bold and confident in big headings.

The letters are built on simple geometric shapes like circles and straight lines. The x-height (the height of small letters like a, e and o) is generous, so text stays clear even at small sizes. Strokes have almost the same thickness everywhere, which gives it a calm, tidy look.

The Gilroy Font Family and Its Weights

The Gilroy font family runs from very thin to very heavy, and each weight has a matching italic. Here is how designers usually use the main ones:

WeightGood for
Thin, UltraLight, LightLarge, airy headings and minimal posters
RegularBody text and longer paragraphs
MediumApp menus, labels and small text that needs a bit more weight
SemiBoldButtons, card titles and subheadings
BoldHeadlines and logos
ExtraBold, Black, HeavyPosters, banners and short punchy words

The Gilroy Heavy font and Black are the thickest styles, so keep them for one or two big words.

A clean UI often uses only two or three weights, for example Regular for text, SemiBold for buttons and Bold for headings.

Best Free Gilroy Font Alternative Picks

No free font is an exact copy, but these come close in feel:

  • Outfit: very similar round, geometric shapes and a modern startup look.
  • Plus Jakarta Sans: a little more open, great for apps and dashboards.
  • Montserrat: wider letters, very popular, and built into Canva.
  • Manrope: the font in the preview above, clean and slightly technical.

Gilroy Font Pairing and Combinations

Gilroy is clean and geometric, so it pairs well with fonts that bring a different texture. Good Gilroy font combinations:

HeadingBody textMood
Gilroy BoldGilroy RegularApps and startup sites, one family only
Playfair DisplayGilroy RegularFashion, lifestyle, premium brands
Gilroy ExtraBoldGeorgia or LoraBlogs and long reading
Gilroy SemiBoldInterDashboards and product UI

Avoid pairing Gilroy with another round geometric sans like Poppins or Montserrat. They look too alike, so the page loses contrast.

  4. Canva: Montserrat and many Google Fonts are built in. Paid Canva plans let you upload fonts you have a licence for.
  5. Websites: use a fallback stack such as font-family: "Gilroy", "Outfit", Arial, sans-serif;. You need a web licence to host Gilroy files on a site.

Common questions

Is Gilroy font free?

No, Gilroy is a commercial font. Some weights may be offered free for personal use, so check the official seller page for the current terms. For free commercial use, choose Outfit, Plus Jakarta Sans or Montserrat.

Where can I find a safe Gilroy font download?

Only from the official seller, such as MyFonts. Avoid sites that offer the full family as a free zip, because those files are shared without permission.

Is Gilroy available on Google Fonts?

No. A search for Google Fonts Gilroy or a Gilroy font Google version finds nothing official, because Gilroy is a paid font. Outfit and Plus Jakarta Sans are on Google Fonts and give a similar geometric look.

Which Gilroy weight is best for an app or website?

Regular works for body text, SemiBold for buttons and Medium for labels. Use Bold or ExtraBold only for headings so the screen does not feel heavy.

Can I type in Gilroy font on Instagram?

No. Instagram uses its own fonts, so you cannot paste text in Gilroy there. For styled text you can copy and paste, try our font generator or bold font page, which use Unicode letters.
