AMS font is the name people use for a large family of decorative Devanagari fonts, popular in Maharashtra for banners, wedding cards, flex boards, posters and Photoshop designs. The letters look like brush or pen calligraphy, which is why AMS Marathi font and AMS Hindi font styles show up on so many festival and shop banners.

This page explains how these fonts work, why you need a converter to type in them, how to get them safely, and which free Unicode fonts can give a similar look. The preview above uses a free look-alike, since AMS fonts are third-party fonts that we do not host.

What Are AMS Fonts?

AMS fonts are a big set of Marathi and Hindi display fonts, each with its own name. People often search for styles like AMS Manthan, AMS Kashi or AMS Aakash. Each one is a separate font file with its own look: some thick and bold for headlines, some thin and flowing like calligraphy.

They are made for big text: names on a wedding card, a shop name on a board, a slogan on a Ganpati or Diwali banner. They are not meant for long paragraphs or typing tests.

AMS fonts are commercial, third-party fonts. Their prices and licence terms come from the seller, so read those before you use a font in paid client work.

Unicode to AMS Marathi Font: Why You Need a Converter

Many AMS fonts are legacy, non-Unicode fonts. Here is what that means in simple words:

  • Unicode gives every Marathi or Hindi letter its own fixed code. Text typed on your phone or in Google is Unicode, and it looks right in any Unicode font.
  • Non-Unicode fonts store Devanagari shapes on English character codes. The font draws Marathi, but the file really holds English letters.

So if you type मराठी on your phone, copy it, and set it to an AMS font in Photoshop, you will get broken letters or boxes. The font expects its own codes, not Unicode.

An AMS font converter fixes this. You paste normal Unicode Marathi or Hindi, and it changes the text into the codes that the AMS font understands. Then you paste that into your design and pick the AMS font. That is what searches like "unicode to AMS calligraphy font converter" and "AMS Marathi font converter" are about. Use the converter that comes with your font package or that the seller recommends, because the codes can differ between font families. The same problem happens with old Hindi fonts like Kruti Dev; our Kruti Dev font page explains it in more detail.

AMS Font Keyboard: Typing Directly

You can also type straight into an AMS font without a converter. You keep your normal English keyboard on, select the AMS font, and press keys based on the font's own key map. The AMS font keyboard is not the same as the Inscript layout on Windows, and it may not match Kruti Dev either.

Typing this way is slow unless you already know the layout. For most people, the easier path is: type in Unicode with a phone or Windows Marathi keyboard, run it through the converter, then paste.

AMS Font Download: Stay Safe

You will find many pages offering an AMS font download or an "AMS all font" pack for free. The same goes for any AMS Marathi font download or AMS Hindi font download page. Be careful. These fonts belong to their makers, and cracked packs from unknown sites can break the licence and may carry malware or unwanted software.

  • Buy or download AMS fonts only from the official seller or a source they name.
  • A real font file ends in .ttf or .otf. Never run a .exe file that claims to be a font.
  • Scan any download before you open it.
  • Keep the purchase details if you use the fonts for client work.

To install a font on Windows, right-click the .ttf file and choose Install. It then shows up in Photoshop, CorelDRAW, Word and other desktop apps.

Free Unicode Alternatives for Marathi and Hindi Designs

If you do not need the exact AMS look, free Unicode fonts are simpler. You type in Marathi or Hindi, paste it, and it just works, with no converter. These are open source on Google Fonts (fonts.google.com) under the SIL Open Font License, so you can use them for commercial work too:

FontStyleGood for
Yatra OneBold, brush-like displayBanners, festival posts, titles
KalamHandwrittenInvitations, friendly notes, social posts
MuktaClean sans serifDetails text on cards and posters
PoppinsGeometric sans serif, Latin and DevanagariModern posters that mix English and Marathi
Noto Sans DevanagariPlain, very readableLong text, phone numbers, addresses

A tip for Photoshop users: Unicode Devanagari needs the right text engine, or the matras may sit in the wrong place. Turn on the Middle Eastern and South Asian option under Preferences, Type, then restart Photoshop.

AMS Font Style vs Copy-Paste Stylish Text

AMS fonts change the real shape of the letters, but only inside design apps. They will not work in an Instagram bio or WhatsApp status. For that, use our Marathi font style or Hindi font style tools. They keep your letters in Unicode and add decorations like ꧁ ꧂ around them, so you can copy and paste them anywhere. For more font choices, see our popular fonts list.

Common questions

Why does my Marathi text break when I use an AMS font?

Many AMS fonts are non-Unicode. They expect their own character codes, not the Unicode text from your phone or keyboard. Run the text through an AMS font converter first, then apply the font.

Is there a free AMS font download?

Some sites offer free AMS packs, but these fonts are commercial third-party fonts. Get them only from the official seller or a source they name, and avoid cracked packs. If you need something free, use open-source Unicode fonts like Yatra One, Kalam or Mukta.

Can I use the AMS Hindi font in Canva?

Canva lets some users upload their own fonts, depending on the plan. But a non-Unicode AMS font still needs converted text to show correctly. A free Unicode Devanagari font is usually easier in Canva.

What is the AMS calligraphy font used for?

It is mostly used for wedding cards, banners, shop boards, festival posts and posters in Marathi and Hindi. It suits short, big text like names and headings, not long paragraphs.

Does AMS font work on WhatsApp or Instagram?

No. Apps only show text in their own fonts, so the AMS look will not carry over. To use the design, save it as an image. For stylish text you can paste, try our Marathi font style tool.
