Logo fonts decide how people feel about a brand before they read a single word. A bold condensed font says sports and energy, a thin serif says luxury, and a rounded font says friendly and kids.
This guide helps you pick a design font style by personality, using free fonts that are safe for commercial logos. It also covers Hindi and Tamil design fonts, font licences, font design software if you want to go further, and simple tips that make a small shop logo look professional. The preview above shows Montserrat, one of the most used free logo fonts.
Free Logo Fonts Safe for Commercial Use

Choose Logo Fonts by Brand Personality
Start with one question: what should a customer feel? Then pick the font design style that matches. Here are five common personalities with free picks for each.
| Personality | Font style | Free picks | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern and clean | Geometric sans serif | Montserrat, Poppins, League Spartan | Tech startups, agencies, apps, coaching classes |
| Elegant and premium | High contrast serif | Playfair Display, Cinzel | Jewellery, boutiques, hotels, law firms |
| Personal and handmade | Script | Great Vibes, Lobster | Bakeries, makeup artists, wedding planners, cafes |
| Strong and loud | Bold condensed | Bebas Neue, Anton, Oswald | Gyms, sports teams, YouTube channels, streetwear |
| Friendly and soft | Rounded sans | Nunito, Quicksand | Kids brands, play schools, health and food apps |
Raleway sits between modern and elegant. Its thin weights look stylish for fashion and beauty, while its bold weights work for a confident tech look.
Licence Check Before You Use Logo Fonts
A logo is commercial use, so the font licence matters more here than anywhere else.
- SIL Open Font License (OFL): safe. Every font in the list above is OFL, so you can use it in a logo, print it on boards and sell products with it. Get them from the official specimen pages on fonts.google.com.
- Personal use only: not allowed for a business logo. Many pretty script fonts on random sites are personal-use only or demo versions.
- Commercial fonts: fine if you buy the right licence from the foundry. Some foundries sell a separate logo or trademark licence, so read the terms.
- Pirated fonts: never. A logo stays in use for years, and a font problem later means a costly redesign.
Our free font download guide explains licence types in more detail.
Font Design Tips That Make a Logo Look Professional
- Test small sizes. Check the logo as a phone app icon, a WhatsApp display picture and a visiting card. Thin script and hairline serifs can vanish when small.
- Use one or two fonts, not five. A bold name font plus a clean tagline font is enough.
- Avoid the most overused trendy fonts as they are. If every cafe in your area uses the same script, yours will blend in.
- Customise the letters. Adjust spacing, join two letters, cut a stroke or add a small icon inside a letter. This turns a free font into a unique name font design.
- Fix the kerning. How to kern letters properly in font design: set the word large, look at pairs like AV, To and LT, and move letters by eye until the gaps look even. Logo software lets you change spacing between single letters.
- Check it in black and white. A good logo works in one colour on a stamp or a printed bill.
- Make your own mark. Never copy another brand's logo or trademarked lettering, even with a small change. It can create legal trouble and confuses customers.
Font Design Logo Ideas: Wordmarks, Monograms and Round Logos
A font design logo uses lettering as the main mark. Three easy types:
- Wordmark: the full name in one strong font with one small custom detail.
- Monogram: two or three joined initials, good for boutiques and personal brands.
- Round logo: a round font for logo badges, like Nunito, inside a circle.
Looking for the Apple logo font? The Apple logo is an apple shape with no letters, and Apple uses its own San Francisco fonts in products (see SF Pro font). Brand fonts and logos are not for your business, so build your own look. For tattoo lettering, see our tattoo font page.
Hindi Design Font and Tamil Design Fonts for Logos
Many Indian shops want a logo in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati or Tamil. A Hindi design font for a logo should still be easy to read from a distance. Free Unicode options on Google Fonts include Rozha One and Yatra One for bold display, Kalam for a handwritten feel, and Mukta or Hind for clean modern text. For Tamil design fonts, look at Noto Sans Tamil, Mukta Malar and Hind Madurai, and use the Google Fonts language filter for more.
For decorative Marathi and Hindi banner lettering, many designers use AMS style fonts. Read our AMS font page and check the licence before using any decorative font in a business logo. Our Hindi font download guide lists more free Devanagari fonts for Hindi font design.
Stylish Name Logo for Gaming and Free Fire
Many gamers want a stylish name logo for a YouTube channel, a guild or a Free Fire name logo for their profile picture. A name style logo maker app or Canva template can help, but the logo font style still decides the look. For an FF name logo or esports look, try bold condensed fonts like Bebas Neue, Anton or Oswald, add an outline or glow, and keep the name short.
Logo editing name style tips:
- Use one bold font for the name and a small clean font for the tag.
- Check the logo as a small round display picture.
- Do not copy a game's official logo or font. Make your own design.
If you only need a styled name for a bio or in-game name, use our Free Fire name style tool instead of a logo font generator.
Font Design Software and Font Designer Tools
Most people do not need to build a full font. Logo work usually happens in Canva, Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape (free) or Figma, where you type the name, convert text to outlines and edit the shapes. See our Canva fonts guide if you design there.
If you want to become a font designer and make a whole typeface, look at dedicated font design software such as FontForge (free and open source), Glyphs (Mac) or FontLab. For beginners, FontForge is the best free start. A good first project is a single word logotype, then a full alphabet later.
Our font generator works differently: it makes stylish Unicode letters for bios and game names, not a logo font file.
Common questions
What are the best free logo fonts?
Montserrat, Poppins, League Spartan, Bebas Neue, Playfair Display, Cinzel, Great Vibes, Lobster, Raleway and Nunito are strong free choices. All are under the SIL Open Font License, so you can use them in a commercial logo.
Can I use any free font design in my business logo?
Only if the licence allows commercial use. OFL fonts from Google Fonts are safe. Fonts marked personal use only or demo are not allowed for a business logo, so read the licence file before you finish the design.
Which design font style is best for a small shop logo?
A bold, clear sans serif like Montserrat or Poppins is the safest choice because it reads well on boards, bills and phone screens. Add a script or serif font only for a short tagline if you want a softer or premium feel.
What is the best font design software for beginners for free?
FontForge is free and open source and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. For logo work without building a full font, free tools like Inkscape or Canva are easier to learn.
Is there a Hindi design font for logos that is free?
Yes. Rozha One, Yatra One, Kalam, Mukta and Hind are free Devanagari fonts on Google Fonts. They work for Hindi and Marathi logos and can be used commercially under the OFL.
Are brand fonts of big companies free to use?
Usually not. Many big brands use custom or paid fonts, and their logo lettering is protected as part of their trademark. Pick a free font with a similar feel and build your own design instead of copying theirs.
